Volunteer Updates, March 2021

In February we welcomed volunteers back to building at the Piohia Build Site in Waimanalo. In four short weeks more than 100 volunteers transformed a simple foundation into a fully framed house.

Due to limited space and overwhelming interest from the community, our Build Calendar was full within hours of releasing the dates. As we prepare to begin construction on a second home in Waimanalo, volunteer opportunities will continue to increase. Don’t want to miss the next announcement of dates? Be sure to join our mailing list and connect with us on Facebook / Instagram!

Mahalo to all who joined us last month to build alongside Moses and his family. Check out photos from your build! Like, comment, share and tag to help spread the word about Honolulu Habitat’s mission of building homes, community and hope here on Oahu.

Meet Nerine Asbel, Community Engagement & Volunteer Specialist (COVS

As we prepare for our busiest build season yet, we are thrilled to welcome Nerine Asbel to the Habitat ohana. As our Community Engagement & Volunteer Specialist, Nerine is focused on growing our volunteer program to support the mission of Honolulu Habitat and providing a meaningful experience for all our volunteers.

Tell us a little about your background; Who is Nerine Asbel?

Before Habitat, I worked for Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts for several years doing Sales & Events. Anything design or arts related especially sparks my interest whether that be interior design, fashion, events, music, art, etc… I am all about great vibes and aesthetics

What do you do enjoy doing in your free time?

Prior to the pandemic I was often found jet setting around the world to eat good food, visit with friends and family, experience cool new adventures. Now that we are more rooted at home, I find fulfillment in painting with watercolor, practicing yoga, baking banana bread, and catering to my plants. I recently started learning to surf and do have ambitions to become as swift as Josie Prendergast.

What inspired you to join Honolulu Habitat?

I joined HHH inspired to do something more community focused. I was especially drawn to this opportunity based on the role allowing me to engage and interact with all walks of life. I really love meeting new people, learning about them and sharing a unique experience with them. I also have an invested interest in learning about the building industry. If I like it, I will consider going back to school for interior design. 😊

What do you hope to accomplish and grow with HHH?

only hope to improve upon the already amazing HHH volunteer experience. As a fresh set of eyes, I look forward to learning about our volunteers, their needs, ambitions and seek out ways in which we can expand upon our volunteer programs. I am really inspired by Habitat’s mission to teach and develop new skill sets to others. Whether that be through the act of physically building a home or providing someone with retail experience at Restore. Opportunities that teach and educate others are so important to me and something I feel very fulfilled to be a part of here. Stay tuned for lots of storytelling and fun! I want to know about youwhat you are passionate about and how we can grow you or fulfill your experience.

Got a question for Nerine? Drop it in the comments section or reach her directly at NAsbel@honoluluhabitat.org.
