Our
History
From humble beginnings to nearly a hundred homes built — the story of Honolulu Habitat for Humanity.
How It All Began
Driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live, Honolulu Habitat for Humanity was founded in 1988 as an independent affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. From the very beginning, our mission has been clear: to partner with families and individuals in need of a hand up to build or improve a place they can call home.
Habitat for Humanity International was itself founded in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller, growing into one of the world's largest nonprofit housing organizations. The Honolulu affiliate brought that global vision to the shores of Oʻahu, responding to Hawaii's unique and urgent affordable housing challenges.
Our early years focused on building partnerships with community organizations, faith groups, and government agencies — laying the groundwork for what would become decades of impactful home building and community strengthening across the island.
Milestones & Impact
Over three decades of building homes, building hope.
95+ Homes Built
From our first home in the late 1980s to our 94th build in 2025, each home represents a family's dream realized through partnership and community support.
450+ Individuals Served
Through new home construction and critical home repairs, we've provided safe, decent housing for more than 450 individuals across Oʻahu.
Thousands of Volunteers
Every year, thousands of volunteers rally to become part of the solution to Hawaii's affordable housing crisis — swinging hammers, raising walls, and changing lives.
Key Partnerships
A cornerstone of our work has been the long-standing partnership with the Department of Hawaiian Homelands (DHHL). Beginning with the Kumuhau subdivision in Waimanalo in 2014 — where we completed five homes with Native Hawaiian families on a single cul-de-sac — and continuing through the Kakaʻina subdivision where we've built 9 homes since 2018, housing 44 individuals.
Our work has been made possible through the support of organizations like NAHASDA, The Office of Hawaiian Affairs, The Clarence T.C. Ching Foundation, The Atherton Foundation, American Savings Bank, and countless corporate and community partners who share our vision of a Hawaiʻi where everyone has a decent place to live.
Looking Forward
Our goal is to make a greater impact on Hawaii's affordable homeownership needs. With the ongoing support of our volunteers, donors, and community, we're committed to building more homes, serving more families, and reaching new milestones. This mission is a shared endeavor.
